I’m super excited to show you how to start a newsletter in 10 minutes.
This is the stupidly simple process I used to start and grow my newsletter, and you can implement it today!
Step 1: Pick a Topic
Don’t overthink it.
Think about what you already know or care about. And think about how many other people are interested in your topic, too.
Do you like fitness? frugal living? gardening? board games? The sky is the limit.
If it’s interesting to you, it’s a good starting point.
Step 2: Choose your Newsletter Name
Make a newsletter name that’s simple and clear.
Here are some examples:
- Budget Weekly
- The Quick Fit Newsletter
- Spring Plant Tips
- Board Game Club
Here are some quick tips for constructing a good newsletter name:
- Use a number, like The 3–2–1 Newsletter, by James Clear
- Make it community-oriented, like Reese’s Book Club
- Specify a day of the week, like the Saturday Solopreneur, by Justin Welsh
- Use popular words like “easy” or “new”
But don’t overthink it. Spend 5 minutes coming up with name ideas, and 5 minutes picking your name. It doesn’t have to be perfect.
Step 3: Use a Free Newsletter Tool
3 of the most popular newsletter tools are BeeHiiv, Substack, and Kit (formerly ConvertKit).
They’re all free to start.
Pick one and create an account. I recommend starting with BeeHiiv.
And don’t worry too much about the newsletter provider you start with. You can always change to a different provider later.
Now name your newsletter, and you’re done with the bare minimum foundation!
Step 4: Add a Signup Form
After you’ve created your sign-up form, you’ll get a link for your newsletter, which will be a subdomain based on your newsletter provider.
Copy your newsletter link and post it everywhere! Put it on your:
- Social media
- YouTube
- Website
- Podcast
And text your family and friends about it.
Now people can and will join, because you’ve asked them to join.
Step 5: Write Your First Email
Your first email doesn’t have to be long. You can truly keep it to just 3–5 sentences.
Introduce yourself, say what your newsletter is about, and let the reader know what they can expect and how often you send your newsletter.
Here’s an example:
“ Hey, I’m Miles. Welcome to the Legit Side Hustles Newsletter, where I share legit and cost-effective ways to earn extra income on the side. You can expect 1 email per week with tips to help you find, start, and grow your side hustle. I’m happy you’re here!”
Step 6: Hit Send and Move Forward
That’s all it took!
Your newsletter is now alive and off to a great start. You’ll have a thriving audience before you know it.
What to do when you’re done
Now you know how to start a newsletter in 10 minutes!
Here are some things you can do next:
- Create a custom welcome email for new subscribers.
- Learn how to monetize your newsletter. I recommend starting with affiliate marketing or online services.
- Come up with a super simple content plan to promote your newsletter. Stick to promoting on 1 or 2 platforms in the beginning.
- Outline your next 4–12 weeks of newsletter content.
- Take time to learn more about your newsletter platform’s tools for growth and other features.
You’re awesome, and thanks for reading!
